Subversive institutions

A few weeks ago I read this tweet from the NPR program On Being:

As a kid, my local library in Roselle, New Jersey never seemed subversive (unless subversive is defined by musty odors and chain smoking old women). What is it about libraries that earns them this designation? Why is the North American church not the most subversive institution in the U.S.? What would it take for the the North American church to be labelled subversive, and is the theology of the dominant Christian tradition resistant to subversion?
